However, many people “will have to buy new devices – despite the fact that their current computers work perfectly,” said Mr. Proctor.
If you do not want to upgrade immediately or if your device is too old for Windows 11, you can register for a program that will continue to offer the most important security updates by October 2026.
This is called extensive security updates (ESU) – but does not provide technical assistance or other software updates.
To get it for free, you will need to be updated to the latest version of Windows 10, have a Microsoft account and make a backup of your PC settings.
Since its launch in 2015, Microsoft has maintained Windows 10 in operation with frequent software updates.

The company recommends users to upgrade free to Windows 11 – but some older devices will not be able to run the new operating system.
