Neither Falésia nor Praia da Rocha: discover the Algarve beach that is considered one of the cleanest in the world

There is a piece of paradise in the Algarve that conquers whoever discovers it. Between the serenity of the Ria Formosa and the golden shine of the sand, Cabanas de Tavira beach was distinguished among the cleanest in the world, thanks to its balance between preserved nature, environmental quality and ecological responsibility.

The distinction does not arise by chance. Inserted in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, this beach maintains a practically untouched landscape, where the harmony between sea and nature creates a setting worthy of the best tropical postcards, according to Idealista. The turquoise tone of the waters and the silence of the sand make it a top destination for those looking for tranquility.

The international recognition is also due to the continuous efforts of local authorities and the community of Tavira. The municipal company Taviraverde has developed several environmental awareness campaigns, including cleaning actions, educational programs and projects to reduce the use of plastics.

Access that is part of the experience

Getting to Cabanas de Tavira beach is, in itself, a little walk through nature. Access is exclusively by boat, in a short and charming crossing of the Ria Formosa. Boats depart from the pier located on Avenida Ria Formosa, in the center of the town, with journeys lasting less than five minutes.

During the route, it is possible to observe water birds and the historic Forte de São João da Barra, built in the 17th century to protect the old port of Tavira. This river route is an invitation to contemplation, preparing the visitor for the paradisiacal scenery that awaits them on the other side.

For those arriving by car, there is free parking near the pier. However, during the summer months, it is advisable to arrive early, as the place is very popular with national and foreign visitors.

Pedestrian bridge for access to the beach has been discussed

The residents of Cabanas de Tavira have been defending the construction of a pedestrian bridge that connects the village directly to the island, thus avoiding exclusive dependence on boats for access to the beach. Many argue that crossing by boat is limited by schedules, prices and conditions, which makes mobility difficult for those who live and work in the area.

A bridge, they say, would allow freer and safer access, especially for families with children, elderly people and residents who want to travel frequently. Furthermore, they believe that the structure could be designed in a harmonious way with the environment of the Ria Formosa, respecting the ecosystem and further valuing the region’s natural heritage.

The meaning of the Blue Flag

Cabanas de Tavira beach boasts the prestigious Blue Flag, an international award that recognizes beaches with exemplary water quality, responsible environmental management and safety for bathers.

Created in 1987 by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the Blue Flag program is supported by the European Union and aims to promote sustainable tourism. In Portugal, it is managed by the European Blue Flag Association (ABAE), which annually assesses strict compliance with environmental, educational and accessibility criteria.

In Cabanas de Tavira, compliance with these criteria is visible at every step: crystal clear waters, clean sands, well-maintained infrastructure and a constant connection to the preservation of the Ria Formosa.

Tavira: history, charm and authenticity

Just a few minutes from the beach, Tavira is one of the most charming cities in the Eastern Algarve, according to . Its historic center, crossed by the Gilão River, preserves a rich heritage that combines traditional architecture, Arab remains and centuries-old churches.

Among the must-sees are the Roman Bridge, symbol of the city, the Castle of Tavira with panoramic views over the rooftops and the Igreja da Misericórdia, one of the best examples of the Portuguese renaissance in the Algarve.

Another unmissable place is Mercado da Ribeira, a space that combines tradition and modernity, where local products, gastronomy and culture coexist side by side.

An Algarve pride that deserves to be celebrated

Cabanas de Tavira beach is much more than a summer destination. It is an example of sustainability, respect for the environment and appreciation of the territory. A place where the Algarve shows its best, preserved nature, genuine hospitality and a beauty that needs no filters.
