The meeting, which will take place in the tourist city of Sharm el-Sheikh, will bring together leaders from more than 20 countries, two days after the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas
The President of the United States, and his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, will chair a peace summit in no on Monday (13), with the presence of the secretary general of and other world leaders. The meeting, which will take place in the tourist city of Sharm el-Sheikh, will bring together “leaders from more than 20 countries”, the Egyptian president’s office said, two days after the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Its goal, he added, is “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, intensify efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security and stability.” A “document ending the war in the Gaza Strip” will be signed during the summit, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, confirmed his presence, as well as the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, and the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz. French President Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will also travel to Egypt, their respective offices said.
The European Council will be represented by its president, António Costa. According to state media, King Abdullah II of Jordan is also expected to attend. For now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not confirmed his presence. Hamas announced that it would not participate in the signing of the document, and one of its main representatives, Hosam Badran, told AFP that the Palestinian Islamist movement was acting “through mediators from Qatar and Egypt.”
The summit will coincide with the long-awaited release of hostages still held in Gaza as part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which came into force on Friday. Since then, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have returned to Gaza City, the main urban center of the narrow territory, devastated by more than two years of war that began with Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
