You are not tired. You are overstimulated

You are not exhausted because you work too much. He is exhausted because he has never rested his own mind. The feeling of permanent tiredness has become an epidemic — and it is not born from effort, it is born from excess. The body can even handle the workload for a while. The brain cannot handle infinite stimulation.

Brazil leads the world ranking for screen time: 9 hours and 32 minutes connected per day (DataReportal 2025). The average adult touches their cell phone 2,617 times a day (Dscout Research) and switches tasks more than 1,100 times during the workday (RescueTime). We no longer call this normal behavior. We call it routine. But this has another name: chronic hyperstimulation.

Practical effect: human focusing capacity plummeted to 47 seconds before the next distraction (Gloria Mark – University of California). Deep concentration sessions today last an average of 3 minutes and 42 seconds before being interrupted (Microsoft Human Attention Study).

The growth in anxiety is no coincidence: Brazil is the most anxious country in the world (WHO, 2024). The brain, exposed to constant stimuli, goes into artificial dopamine mode, builds tolerance and asks for more — more notifications, more videos, more quick rewards. Result: you can’t turn it off, even when you’re stopped.

This fatigue is not physical. It’s cognitive. 75% of Brazilians say they feel “permanent mental fatigue” (IPSOS 2024). And, contrary to what we imagine, this does not improve with rest.

On the contrary: leisure has become content consumption. Resting stopped being a break and became infinite scrolling. On average, we spend 3 hours and 4 minutes a day on social media alone (DataReportal). This equates to 46 days a year. A whole month and a half of your life going on the timeline. According to the same report, we currently spend 1/3 of the year on our cell phones. Yes, it’s scary.

Meanwhile, the work lost power. We waste 2h40 a day in application switching and outages (Harvard Business Review). 61% admit to checking WhatsApp during meetings (Opinium 2024). 35% say they open their cell phone automatically without realizing it (Deloitte). It’s not a lack of discipline. It is technological architecture designed to hijack attention. And it works.

The consequence is invisible, but brutal: there is an inflation of effort and a recession of results. We work longer hours, produce more volumes, generate more movement — and deliver less thought, less depth, less strategy. Productivity didn’t drop because people got lazy. It fell because the world became too noisy to think.

It’s not rest that’s needed. It’s silence.
