A goal in literally the last minute gave Austria their first defeat in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in Romania. A header goal from Virgil Ghiţă in the 95th minute ensured a 1-0 home win in Bucharest, which was not really evident at the end of a manageably good game. Austria is still two points ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Group H table, and Romania also still has a theoretical chance of winning the group with ten points.
