Vinegar is not only a culinary ingredient, but also our ally in the fight for a clean house or apartment. It is useful for cleaning a greasy stove, but also as a descaling agent for bathroom fittings.

Lavender vinegar from Action is perfect for cleaning and washing towels

Vinegar, specifically white spirit vinegar, acts as a natural softener and freshener. Dissolves detergent residues and softens fabrics without weighing them down. Prevents scale build-up in the washing machine. Restores absorbency to towels and neutralizes unpleasant odors. However, not everyone likes the smell of vinegar and although you cannot smell it after drying the fabric, for many people it is an insurmountable barrier. The solution may be lavender vinegar, which costs about PLN 4 per liter at Action. Its smell is not as bothersome as in the case of regular vinegar and it is perfect not only for washing towels, but also for washing floors, windows and cleaning the bathroom. An alternative may be plain vinegar to which you can add a bit of essential oils with your favorite scent.

Why is it better not to wash towels with fabric softener?

Although fabric softeners tempt with their scent and promise of softness, they do not always work well with fabrics. They can clog the fibers of towels, making them less absorbent. Moreover, if we overdo the amount, the fabric softener leaves a residue that can lead to an unpleasant odor over time.

How to wash towels with vinegar?

Load the washing machine with towels. Do not overfill the drum so that water can circulate freely. Add the powder or capsule to the detergent compartment. Pour the vinegar into the fabric softener compartment (the one marked with a flower or “softener”). It is best to use approximately 100–150 ml of spirit vinegar. Optionally, add a few drops of essential oil (e.g. lavender or lemon) to the vinegar if you want a delicate scent, or use lavender vinegar. Set the washing program to 60 degrees C, this is the optimal temperature for hygienic washing of towels and is absolutely enough to keep them hygienically clean. Higher temperatures will cause the fabric to boil and lose its softness. It is also important not to mix vinegar with bleach, as this may lead to the release of harmful fumes. Don’t use vinegar with every wash, every 2-3 washes is enough to keep your towels fresh and absorbent. If you can, dry your towels outdoors as an additional way to naturally refresh them.
