However, it turns out that not all this type of advice makes sense. One of them is a repeated myth, as said by a famous trichologist.

Closing the hair cuticles strengthens their protective barrier, which helps limit moisture loss and reduce frizz. It is also a process that increases the strands’ resistance to mechanical and thermal damage. As a result, we can enjoy the surface of our hair, which will look much better.

It is often said that washing your hair with cold water closes the hair cuticles well. However, it turns out that this is not entirely true, because it is only a temporary and physical effectbecause the structure is not chemically closed. Trichologist Olga Poniatowska, who runs the popular educational profile on TikTok @towietrycholog, explains why this is a myth.

She says in her video that regardless of the temperature, the water loosens the hair, so it cannot close the cuticles. Therefore, if you want to smooth them, you should use appropriate products. They must have an acidic pH. These include masks, conditioners, laminating sprays, silicone oils and lameral water. They actually close the cuticle and have a positive effect on the appearance of the hair, not only acting temporarily.

First of all, after washing, instead of rubbing them vigorously with a towel, it is better to gently squeeze them onto a microfiber or cotton T-shirt.
