Missão D'Chef Program celebrates the talent and dedication of social cooks in the Algarve

The Algarve Food Bank Against Hunger presented the new Missão D’Chef program, an initiative that aims to value and distinguish cooks from social institutions in the region, recognizing their essential role in the daily preparation of thousands of meals. Next Thursday, October 16th, World Food Day, the final of this first edition will take place at the Faro School of Hotel and Tourism.

In a statement, the president of , Nuno Cabrita Alves, highlighted that “this first edition is being a success, with a huge support from partners, but above all with great satisfaction from the cooks”.

The person in charge added that “the appreciation of these professionals was something that was necessary, due to the great responsibility they have on a daily basis in preparing thousands of meals, especially for children and the elderly”.

The first edition of the program features fifteen cooks from thirteen institutions across the Algarve and began in March, ending on Thursday, World Food Day, with a ceremony that will take place between 7:30 pm and 9:00 pm, in the restaurant of the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Faro, presented by Algarve actor João Mota.

Missão D’Chef is based on nutrition, the full use of food and the mitigation of food waste, valuing the meals served by the Algarve IPSS and respecting the principles of the Mediterranean Diet. Topics such as hygiene, food safety and cooking techniques were also covered.

The project has the support of several partner entities, including the Faro Hotel and Tourism School, Sogenave, the University of Algarve, Fiscalcontrol, Águas do Algarve and the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary.

In the practical component, in addition to the chefs from the Hotel School, professionals from the Highgate Portugal group and the Epic Sana Hotel also participated, with the competition jury chaired by chef Noélia Jerónimo.

The program was distinguished with the Caixa Social’24 Prize, awarded by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, worth 25 thousand euros, recognizing the project as a community health initiative.

At the final ceremony, the three best cooks and the institutions they represent will be awarded, in an event that celebrates the dedication, talent and social importance of these professionals.
