OpenAI has partnered with Broadcom to produce its first in-house artificial intelligence processors, as the company seeks to secure the computing power needed to meet growing demand for its services.
Broadcom shares were up more than 7% in early trading.

The companies announced on Monday that OpenAI will design the chips that will be developed and deployed by Broadcom starting in the second half of 2026. They will launch custom chips with a capacity of 10 gigawatts, whose power consumption is approximately equivalent to the needs of more than 8 million homes in the United States.

The deal is the latest in a series of massive investments in AI semiconductors that highlight the technology sector’s growing appetite for computing power to create systems that meet or surpass human intelligence.

“The partnership with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock the potential of AI,” OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman said in a statement.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed and it was not immediately clear how OpenAI would finance the deal.
