Portuguese man rescued after several days trapped in a tunnel in Istanbul

A Portuguese man was rescued in Istanbul after spending several days trapped between the walls of a tunnel. The man, identified as Caires Ferreira, had lost his passport and ended up becoming disoriented while trying to reach the Portuguese consulate.

According to the Turkish press, the case took place between the end of August and September 11, although it was only recently publicized. Caires Ferreira had arrived in Türkiye in mid-August, through Izmir Adnan Menderes airport, but after losing his documents he was left without the means to return home. He traveled on foot to the Kasimpasa area, in Istanbul, with the aim of seeking help at the Portuguese consulate.

Without money or shelter, he decided to take refuge in the Kasimpasa-Haskoy tunnel, where he found a small opening between the concrete walls. However, he ended up trapped inside, unable to find a way out. It was only on September 11, around 8:30 am, that a passerby heard her screams and alerted the authorities.

The rescue operation lasted around six hours and involved dozens of operators, who had to break a reinforced concrete wall to free him. The man was found exhausted and with injuries to several parts of his body. After being taken to the hospital and receiving medical care, he was handed over to authorities for subsequent deportation.
