Projections: Luís Filipe Menezes close to 5th absolute majority, PS recovers Faro

After being elected president of the third largest municipality in the country, Vila Nova de Gaia, in 1997, and re-elected in 2001, 2005 and 2009, Luís Filipe Menezes is expected to win his fifth term — and the fifth absolute majority, the first projections indicate. António Pina regains Faro for the PS.

The candidacy of Luís Filipe Menezes (PPD/PSD, CDS-PP and IL) is close to winning the municipal elections in Vila Nova de Gaia with absolute majorityin this Sunday’s elections, according to the Pythagorean projection for the TVI e a CNN Portugal.

According to this projection, Menezes will reach between 40.6 and 46% of the votes. Behind Menezes should be João Paulo Correiafrom the PS, with 30.6 to 35.6% of the votes.

The CMTV projection also gives the victory to Luís Filipe Menezes, with a break between 42.4% and 46.4%. João Paulo Correia should obtain between 31.5 and 35.5%. Chega is the third political force in Vila Nova de Gaia, with a break between 7.1% and 11.1%.

RTP’s projection gives a technical tie between the two candidacies, giving the PSD candidate a result between 39 and 43%, against 37 to 41% of the PS candidacy.

If the projections are confirmed, the PSD will regain the presidency of the Chamber of the third largest authority in the country, which was led between 2013 and 2025 by the socialist Eduardo Vítor Rodriguesthan in June.

PS recovers Faro 16 years later

The socialist Antonio Pina should be the new president of the Chamber of Faro, regaining the authority for the PS after four terms of Rogério Bacalhau (PSD), which obtained an absolute majority in the 2021 municipal elections.

According to the first projections by SIC and CNN Portugal, the socialist candidate should obtain between 36 to 41.2% of the votesto the relent of the PSD/CDS/PAN/PAN/MPT candidate, Christopher Northwhich must collect between 30.9% and 35.9%.

The Catholic University’s projection for RTP also gives António Pina the victory, with a vote between 39% to 44% of votes.

In third place, the candidacy of the president of the Chega Parliamentary Group, Pedro Pintoshould obtain between 13% and 16% of the votes.

A Now projection also gives victory to the PS, with 36,5 a 40,5% of votes and three to five mandates, and places the Faro Capital de Confiança coalition in second place, with 30.7 to 34.7% and two to four mandates, with Chega in third place, with 14.9 to 18.9% and one to three councilors.
