The acting president, Geraldo Alckmin, stated this Monday (13) that the government’s goal is to achieve the “zero illegal deforestation by 2030”.

The statement was made during a speech at the Official Ceremony of, in Brasília, a preparatory meeting for the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém, Pará.

According to Alckmin, the country has advanced in combating deforestation in the Amazon. “In the last two and a half years, we have had a drop of almost 50% in deforestation in the Amazon,” he said.

“The goal is zero illegal deforestation by 2030. Including restoration of the forest with resources that are already being made available mainly through the Climate Fund”, added Geraldo Alckmin.

During the speech, Alckmin also commented on Brazil’s role in the energy transition and He recalled that more than 80% of the Brazilian electricity matrix is ​​renewable and stated that the country “wants to continue leading by example” in environmental discussions.

COP30, which will mark 10 years of the Paris Agreement, should bring together heads of state, negotiators and civil society organizations from almost all UN member countries.

Brazil intends to use the meeting to reinforce its climate leadership, presenting advances on topics such as bioeconomy, energy transition and preservation of the Amazon.
