Back pain affects many people, limits them in motion and makes their daily lives unpleasant. Although the cause may be a poor sleep position or a sedentary job, sometimes the real reason is less apparent. This problem was also had American journalist Korin Miller, who only revealed the answers after a few years.
- Journalist Korin Miller has been suffering from back pain for years.
- After several visits to specialists, she found that she had a shorter left leg.
- This asymmetry caused muscle tension and discomfort in the central body.
For years she was troubled by back pain
Korin Miller from Self’s magazine has long suffered from persistent back pain. Therefore, she decided to examine the cause of her problem. “It started about six months after birth. One day I woke up with a painful stiffness of the muscles on the left side of the back and butt. I couldn’t bend to shave my legs in the shower, and the toothpaste was unbearable. I had a problem lifting the baby and sitting – whether at work or when driving“she said.
She revealed that for the first time the pain itself disappeared after a few weeks. “I ran most of my life on a long track and assumed that the symptom was caused by too early return to birth. But about four months later it was repeated. And again. It was rare, so I didn’t take it seriously, but then the pain became unbearable. I had to find a solution“Korin added.

Korin talked to several specialists dealing with spine problems but none of them could determine the cause of her pain. Some recommended steroid injections, others suggested strengthening exercises, and one even told her to end permanently.
Finally, a friend working at a nearby orthopedic clinic called on her to make an X -ray examination. The images revealed that her left leg is one centimeter shorter than the right leg. Although it may seem that this deviation is slight, disrupted her body’s balance, caused muscle tension and occasional cramps. To restore the balance she had to wear a cork reinforcement with a centimeter heel in the left shoe. Korin hesitated at first, but has adapted to this change and has had no problems for five years.
Although the mum’s story may seem unusual, up to 90 % of the population may have a different leg length. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, this disagreement usually results from deviations in the length of the femur or tibia. This can cause hip, knee or back pain. These problems are difficult to diagnose because they are usually caused by other conditions including muscle tension, plate hernia or osteoarthritis.
Symptoms of this condition often vary. In many cases, the problem will solve a simple heel insert or lifting of the heel, but other patients may need surgery. “Even people with larger differences in the length of the legs are first recommended by the inserts to see if they help,” said Dr. Samir Mehta.
