Torrential rains that hit Mexico last week left at least 64 people dead and 65 missing, the government said on Monday, after the rains triggered landslides, cut electricity in some municipalities and caused rivers to overflow.
Mexican authorities sent thousands of personnel to help evacuate, clean up and monitor areas of the Gulf Coast and central states hardest hit by the rains, which lasted much of last week.
Laura Velázquez, national civil protection coordinator, said that Hidalgo and Veracruz were the most affected states, with 29 deaths and 18 missing people reported in Veracruz, and 21 deaths and 43 missing people in Hidalgo.
