‘Her face and her laugh lit up any space she walked into’

paid tribute to the actress, who died last Saturday (11), aged 79. The director recalled the moment they met: “I thought she was so charming, so beautiful, so magical, that I questioned my sanity. Is it possible to fall in love so quickly?”, he said, in a text sent to Free Press, published this Sunday (12).

The first time he saw the actress was during an audition for Play It Again, Sam in 1969. “I thought if Huckleberry Finn was a stunning young woman, it would be Keaton,” he confessed, about Mark Twain’s famous character.

They didn’t connect instantly: “She was shy, I was shy. Two shy people can make things very awkward.” Shyness soon gave way to romance. Although they were not officially married, their relationship became known in . “As time went by, I began making films for a solo audience, that of Diane Keaton. I never read a review of what I made and cared only about what Keaton had to say about it.”

Among other anecdotes about the couple’s life, he praised the actress: “Unlike anyone else the planet has ever known and will probably never see again, her face and her laugh lit up any space she entered.”

“This beautiful country girl went on to become an award-winning actress and fashion icon,” he wrote. “We had a wonderful few years together and finally moved on. Only God and Freud can figure out why we broke up.”

“A few days ago, the world was a place that Diane Keaton occupied. Now, it is a world that no longer has her. Consequently, it is even darker. Still, her films exist. And her incredible laugh still echoes in my head”, added the director, about her legacy.

Death of Diane Keaton

Diane Keaton, award-winning actress and Hollywood veteran, died last Saturday. A family spokesperson released a statement to the US press asking for privacy and without giving further details.

A friend of the actress gave an interview to People anonymously, about her last months of life. “She took a turn for the worse very suddenly, it was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her. It was unexpected, especially for someone so spirited and with so much strength,” said the source.

“In recent months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t completely aware of what was going on,” he continued.

Known especially for her role in romantic comedies and films by director (and actor) Woody Allen, Diane Keaton even received an Oscar for ‘Neurotic Groom, Nervous Bride’ (1977).
