The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, signed this Monday, the 13th, the document that formalizes his early retirement. According to the request, retirement will take effect from Friday, the 18th, ending a 12-year cycle of the minister in the highest Court in the country.
The announcement of Barroso’s departure was made last week. At 67 years old, he could still remain in the STF until he turns 75, the age limit established by the Constitution. At the end of September, Barroso handed over the presidency of the Supreme Court to minister Edson Fachin.
When leaving the court, Barroso declared that he felt “that now is the time to follow other paths. I don’t even have them well defined, but I have no attachment to power”, he said.

With the early end of Barroso’s judiciary, space opens up for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to make his third nomination to the STF. Previously, ministers Cristiano Zanin and Flávio Dino had already been nominated and approved by the Senate.
So far, names like Jorge Messias, member of the Baptist Church and current attorney general of the Union, are among those considered for the vacancy in the Supreme Court.
In addition to him, Bruno Dantas, minister of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), and Vinícius de Carvalho, minister of the General Comptroller of the Union (CGU), are also mentioned. Another candidate is senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
