Despite being without sedation, she did not wake up effectively, and a head tomography indicated severe brain damage with possible sequelae.
Four people from the same family were hospitalized in serious condition after ingesting a toxic plant that was mistaken for cabbage during lunch. The incident occurred last Wednesday (8), on a farm in the rural area of Patrocínio, in Alto Paranaíba. According to the latest medical bulletin, a 60-year-old man is in a serious condition, in an induced coma and dependent on breathing apparatus, awaiting the response to a new antibiotic.
Another man, aged 64, was extubated on Saturday (11). However, the most worrying case is that of a 37-year-old woman, whose condition is very serious. Despite being without sedation, she did not wake up effectively, and a head tomography indicated severe brain damage with possible sequelae. The victims began to feel ill around 3pm on Wednesday, shortly after lunch. At the time of rescue, they suffered cardiorespiratory arrest, but the rescuers managed to reverse the condition while still on the spot.
The vegetable that caused the poisoning was harvested on the farm’s own land and served sautéed during the meal. The family, who had recently moved to the area, believed the plant was kale due to its similarity. However, it was an extremely toxic plant, common on roadsides.
The Fire Department highlighted that the plant’s similarity to cabbage led to confusion. The case has attracted a lot of attention in Minas Gerais and has had national repercussions due to its picturesque and rare nature. Authorities and health teams reinforce the importance of not consuming unknown plants found in nature, without proper identification and certainty that they are edible, to avoid serious accidents like this. The family’s recovery is the main focus at the moment.
