Mário Centeno could be the next president of the European Banking Authority. It’s Lagarde’s bet.
Mario Centeno He is no longer the governor of the Bank of Portugal but he already has a possible destiny: President of the European Banking Authority (EBA, acronym in English).
Centeno since he was going to continue at Banco de Portugal. He should stay as a consultant. But it is a bet by Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank (ECB).
The EBA coordinates banking regulation in Europe. Independent of the European Union, it defines rules for European banks, seeks to ensure fair competition, protect consumers of financial services; attempts to contribute to European financial stability.
In the background, regulates banks in Europewith a relevant role in conducting banking stress tests, which assess the sector’s resistance to combating a crisis.
The president is still José Manuel Campa. But the Spaniard will leave his position in February 2026, due to personal reasons.
