The general strike called in Spain this Wednesday October 15 It remains despite the peace agreements in Palestine. The different unions maintain their calls to express solidarity with the Palestinians and demand that the agreements reached to end the war in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank are met, among other reasons.
Different union organizations have registered several calls with the labor authority to provide legal coverage to workers who decide to join. Workers who want to join may do so without having to previously notify their company or those responsible for it that they are going to strike.
Among the convening organizations are various trade union centers. Workers Commissions (CCOO) and the General Union of Workers (UGT), the two majority unions in Spain, have opted for a partial strike call.
They are not the only ones. Other unions, such as CGT o to IAC —the latter with an important weight in the administration of the Generalitat— have also called for a strike.
The protest may be partial or total, so that each worker may exercise their right to strike during certain time slots, for a few minutes or during their entire working day.
In the case of CCOO y UGTthe strikes have been set in three specific periods: from 2 to 4 in the morning, from 10 to 12 in the morning and from 5 to 7 in the afternoon.
Other unions, such as CGT o to IAC —the latter with an important weight in the administration of the Generalitat— have called for a total strike. That is, they call on workers to stop activity throughout the working day.
Those workers who only want to stop for a few minutes and concentrate at the doors of their offices, factories or shops may do so at any time during their workday.
The unions argue that the recent agreements still do not guarantee lasting peace or fair conditions for the Palestinian population. They demand, among others, that the ceasefire be permanent and verifiable, that immediate access for humanitarian aid be ensured and that the reconstruction of Gaza focus on the needs of its people, avoiding foreign speculation.
CCOO and UGT demand that control of Gaza by the Palestinian State be established within a specific time frame and that Israeli troops be immediately withdrawn from all Palestinian territories, including illegal settlements.
From the CGT they see the peace agreement as the result of coercion, “under the threat of devastating the Palestinian people with impunity.” And they call on workers to mobilize, since “Israel has already skipped other ceasefire agreements and this one does not meet the necessary conditions to think that it will be different.”
A common denominator between the different calls is the total arms embargo on Israel and the effective prohibition of arms trade in the present and future.
Workers who decide to participate in the general strike on October 15 are not obliged to notify in advance to your company.
However, the company may require the presence in the workplace of those employees who are included in the minimum services decreed by the Generalitat of Catalonia. To determine if a worker is not part of these services, the company must provide advance notice several hours before the start of their work day.
