All deaths were registered in the State of São Paulo: three in the capital, one in São Bernardo dos Campos and another in Osasco
The registers 32 confirmed cases of methanol poisoning, according to data released this Monday (13). The country had an increase of three positive records of poisoning by the substance in relation to the last balance, published on Friday (10).
There are 181 incidents that are still under investigation and a total of 320 suspicions have been discarded, according to the ministry. The number of five deaths confirmed due to the consumption of the substance remains the same in relation to the last two reports. All deaths were registered in the State of – three in the capital, one in and another in .
With 100 cases under investigation, São Paulo also continues to be the State with the highest number of confirmed occurrences of substance intoxication, with 23 notifications – three more than the last report and which correspond to the national increase – and the five positive deaths already mentioned. Rio Grande do Sul, with one case, and Paraná, with three, are the two other states that also have confirmed cases of patients poisoned by methanol.
The States that are also investigating possible contamination are Pernambuco, with 43 suspicions, Espírito Santo (9 cases under investigation), Rio Grande do Sul (6), (5), Mato Grosso do Sul (4), Piauí (4), Goiás (3), Maranhão (2), Alagoas (2), Minas Gerais (1), Paraná (1) and Rondônia (1).
In addition to the five confirmed deaths, another nine are still under investigation: three in São Paulo, three in Pernambuco, one in Ceará, one in Minas Gerais and one in Mato Grosso do Sul. Since the beginning of the count, another 15 suspicious deaths have been ruled out.
Last Thursday (9), the Ministry of Health reported that it had acquired a batch of 2,500 units of the antidote fenopizole intended for the treatment of poisoning, which has been caused by the consumption of adulterated drinks. Around a thousand ampoules will remain in stock and another 1,500 units of the drug have begun to be distributed to care for patients. São Paulo is the state that receives the largest amount due to the largest number of cases.
