In a campaign for possible nomination to the (Federal Supreme Court), the senator (PSD-MG) participated this Monday (13) in a meeting by the president of , (União Brasil-AP), with part of .

The presidents (STF) and (STJ) and the head of the PGR (Attorney General’s Office), were also at the meeting at the official residence of the Senate Presidency.

The meeting was scheduled for the Judiciary leadership to announce an internal agreement on a proposal to divide revenues from — an issue that had been held up in the Senate for a year due to division between the (National Council of Justice), the (Federal Public Ministry) and the (Union Public Defender’s Office).

Pacheco’s presence was seen with surprise by at least one of the meeting’s participants, according to reports made to Sheet. The senator has no relation to the proposal and his name was not on the agenda.

The Minas Gerais senator’s participation was seen as a sign that the STF vacancy was open with the .

The photo of the meeting was released by the press office of the Senate Presidency. In the image, Pacheco appears in a blue tie, with his hands on the armchair. Alcolumbre, by his side, is the only one smiling showing his teeth.

Fachin, Benjamin and Gonet smile discreetly sitting on a white sofa. The meeting lasted just over an hour. Davi Alcolumbre commented about the meeting on social media.

“I insisted on the presence of President @rodrigopacheco, author of the project to update the Civil Code and president of the temporary committee created to debate the topic. We talked about important issues for Brazil that have been debated since Pacheco’s term as head of the Senate,” he wrote.

“Today’s meeting reaffirms our respect and recognition of the importance of the Judiciary for the country. Permanent dialogue and joint efforts are fundamental to strengthening institutions and building a fairer and more balanced Brazil”, he concluded.

Pacheco is the name supported by the Senate leadership and by members of the STF, such as Gilmar Mendes and Alexandre de Moraes. These groups suggest the nomination of the Minas Gerais senator for the new Supreme Court vacancy.

Lula’s allies, however, believe that the minister of the AGU (Attorney General of the Union), Jorge Messias, is ahead in the dispute for the seat, due to his proximity and loyalty to the president.

The main objective of the meeting was to discuss an agreement on Federal Court costs — a fee paid by the parties to a case to cover the services necessary to carry out the legal action.

A proposal in the Senate updates the values of these procedural fees, frozen since 2000. The possibility of revenue growing opened up a dispute between the MPF, the CNJ and the DPU to obtain a slice of the Special Federal Justice Fund.

The agreement communicated to Alcolumbre —and Pacheco— establishes that 80% of the money from legal costs will be paid to the Federal Court, to modernize the courts with technology, training and infrastructure.

The remaining 20% will be divided between the MPF (9%), the CNJ (6%) and the DPU (5%). These bodies entered the dispute for the money under the argument that they are part of the Justice system.

The proposal is opposed by the OAB (Brazilian Bar Association) for increasing the costs of filing lawsuits. “This is an issue that I have been following personally, together with President Pacheco, in the search for alignment between the Judiciary and the OAB”, said Alcolumbre.
