The lowest gravity in Slovakia is on Lomnicky shield, mainly due to the specific extreme shape of this shield. On its website, the Institute of Sciences about the land of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) informed about it.
According to the Institute, the current Slovak gravimetric database is unique worldwide in terms of a number of points with respect to the size of the country. It is thus a source of information about the gravel field of Slovakia. Together with further information, it allows scientists to predict the gravity acceleration even in places where direct measurements have not yet been made.
So far, one of these places was the highest point of Slovakia, the Gerlach peak. “According to intuition, at the top of our highest shield, the lowest gravity acceleration should be one of the principled theoretical rules of gravity. However, our simulated calculations have shown something other than intuition,” The Institute of Sciences of SAS described the Institute of Sciences.
He explained that the predicted gravity acceleration value was slightly higher than on Lomnicky peak, which has a lower height. “According to our calculations, this interesting phenomenon is responsible for the shape of these shields. The Gerlachovský shield is slightly more massive than Lomnický peak, causing” additional gravity “at its peak compared to Lomničák,” scientists said.
The Institute of Earth Sciences organized a geodetic-geophysical mini-expedition of the Gerlach shield in September to test its gravity acceleration. The measurements confirmed the calculations of the Institute. “The gravity acceleration on the Gerlach shield (specifically 9.8035447 meters per second to the second) is slightly higher than on Lomnicky shield, and therefore the first place in the lowest gravity in Slovakia remains for the time being Lomničák, especially thanks to the specific extreme shape of this shield,” The experts stated.
