The disaster occurred in a gold -gold mine called Cuatro Esquinas de Caratal, which is located in the El Callao area in the state of Bolívar, approximately 850 kilometers southeast of Caracas. According to Reuters, the bodies of the dead were found in three different bane shafts, whose vertical parts collapsed due to floods.
Rescue work is currently underway. Their first phase consists in draining water from all shafts to lower its level. Subsequently, further steps are to be evaluated, including the pick -up of bodies.
