US cancels visas of more than 50 Mexican politicians

The US government revoked the visas of at least 50 Mexican politicians and officials under the allegation of combating drug trafficking and drug cartels. The measure mostly affects members of the ruling Morena party (Movimiento Regeneración Nacional, left), but it also affects representatives of other parties.

The revocations represent an expansion of US anti-narcotics actions under (Republican), targeting politicians considered diplomatically sensitive.

The revocations were the target of criticism and concern from Mexican authorities. The president (Morena) stated, on this Tuesday (14.Oct.2025), that she was not aware of the cases and that the USA generally does not inform governments about this type of decision.

The names of those affected are not yet known, and the US does not release statistics on visa revocations for foreign employees.

The revocations could hamper bilateral relations at a time when countries are negotiating agreements on trade and security. Sheinbaum has sought to cooperate with the Americans in combating cartels, but criticizes suggestions of (republican) on unilateral military actions in , classifying them as a violation of national sovereignty.
