The comments took place at a press conference alongside the US Trade Representative (USTR), Jamieson Greer, this Wednesday. At the event, authorities clarified the progress of trade negotiations with the recent increase in tensions.
On the occasion, Bessent resumed criticism of China’s purchase of Russian oil, claiming that the country is “feeding the war machine against China”. However, despite being in favor of tariffing countries that buy the Russian commodity, the US Treasury Secretary said that European allies need to join the initiative for it to be effective.
