Chinese university launches AI aimed at agriculture

Institution presented Shennong Large Model 3.0 with better performance and lower computational demand

CAU (China Agricultural University) launched Shennong Large Model 3.0, a new version of its artificial intelligence system aimed at the agricultural sector. The announcement was made on Monday (October 13, 2025) during WAFI 2025 (World Agri-Food Innovation Conference), held in Beijing.

The system presents a reduction in computational demands and a 5% increase in performance compared to its previous version. Its 1st version, launched in 2023, established basic agricultural knowledge and question answering capabilities, while the 2nd introduced multimodal functions and expanded the technology’s applications in the sector.

Since its inception, the model has been trained with a specialized agricultural dataset. The system integrates more than 10 million graphics, 50 million production records and 20,000 monographs on the topic.

The platform offers 36 specialized agents organized into 6 categories, including smart breeding, planting and agriculture. Tests have already been implemented in several areas around Beijing, in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region in northern China, and in Heilongjiang province in the northeast of the country.

The programs provide localized services such as plant protection and personalized guidance throughout the growing process. The Shennong 3.0 model covers 90% of agricultural disciplines and 80% of agricultural scenarios, according to Sun Qixin, president of China Agricultural University.
