Coach Filipe Luís’ new manager, Jorge Mendes, is articulating the next steps in the coach’s career. According to information released on ESPN’s “Fala a Fonte” program, the objective is to take the Flamengo commander to coach Atlético de Madrid, the club where the former full-back made history as a player, in the future.

The strategy aims to position Filipe Luís as Diego Simeone’s natural successor, taking advantage of the Brazilian’s strong identification with the Spanish team and his good start as a coach.

Is Filipe Luís leaving Flamengo?

The news comes at a time when Filipe Luís and Flamengo are talking about a contract renewal. According to ESPN, the negotiation has not yet been finalized due to financial differences.

In recent days, Filipe presented a counter-proposal to the Red and Black board, and the club is considering making a new offer, with the expectation of reaching an agreement that ensures its permanence until 2026.

Recently, Fenerbahçe, from Türkiye, showed interest in hiring the coach, but negotiations did not progress. Flamengo, aware of this scenario, plans to include two termination fines in the new contract: one valid at the end of the season and another higher in case of an attack by international clubs.

Internally, Filipe Luís’ work is widely praised, due to the impressive results and dedication and good communication with all the club’s departments.

Since taking charge of Rubro-Negro in the final stretch of 2024, the coach has won the Copa do Brasil, the Supercopa do Brasil and the Campeonato Carioca this season. Currently, Flamengo is the vice-leader of the Brasileirão and is qualified for the semi-finals of the Libertadores.

Filipe Luís’ numbers at Flamengo as coach

  • 2 seasons (2024 and 2025)
  • 56 games
  • 37 wins
  • 3 titles (Copa do Brasil 2024, Supercopa do Brasil 2025 and Campeonato Carioca 2025)

Atlético de Madrid cultivates interest in the Brazilian

In June this year, the Catalan newspaper “Mundo Deportivo” reported that Atleti had begun to project the post-Simeone period, with Filipe Luís being one of the main names on the list of possible successors.

Officials from the Spanish club closely followed Flamengo’s performance in the Club World Cup and were impressed with the Brazilian team’s style of play. Thus, Atlético intends to act behind the scenes to try to make a future signing viable.

The admiration for Filipe Luís within Atlético goes beyond his current performance as a coach. The former full-back is fondly remembered for his time at the club. His career also has a direct link with Diego Simeone, as the player was signed by the colchonero team in 2010, shortly before the arrival of the Argentine coach.
