Germany warns about the threat of a military conflict with Russia: "We must not rest on our laurels"

The German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) has issued a strong warning about the growing risk of a direct military confrontation between Russia and NATO, which could materialize before the end of this decade. Martin hunger, President Del BND since September, he appeared before the parliamentary control committee in the Bundestag, where

thinking that a possible Russian attack will not take place until 2029 at the earliest. We are already in the heat of the moment today,” Jäger added.

According to Jäger, Moscow considers it viable to expand its influence westward, even at the cost of provoking an armed conflict. “Russia will not hesitate to resort to force if it considers it necessary to subdue Europe to its sphere of influence,” he stated. The intelligence chief stressed that it should not be assumed that an eventual Russian attack will be postponed until 2029, since “the threat is present today.”

This warning comes after a series of recent incidents that have raised alarm bells in Europe: violations of Estonian airspace by Russian fighters, and acts of sabotage and disinformation on German soil. Jäger described the current context as an “icy peace” that could transform into a violent confrontation at any moment.

For his part, Sinan Selen, head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), supported Jäger’s statements and denounced that Russian services are intensifying their espionage, sabotage and cyberattacks operations with the aim of weakening European liberal democracies. “Russia has not abandoned Cold War tactics,” he warned.

Both officials agreed that Europe must strengthen its preparation for a possible escalation, at a time when geopolitical tensions intensify and collective defense mechanisms are put to the test.
