The president (PT) met on Tuesday night (Oct 14, 2025) with ministers from the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to talk about who will take Roberto Barroso’s seat on the Court. The meeting was at Palácio da Alvorada.
Ministers Gilmar Mendes, Alexandre de Moraes, Flávio Dino and Cristiano Zanin were present. The Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, was also invited. Lula wanted to discuss the profile of the next nominee.
So far, the most popular name is that of the Minister of General Advocacy of the Union, Jorge Messias. The former president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) is also in the running. He has the support of Dino and Gilmar. The current president of the House, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), has also defended his name for the Court.
On Monday (Oct 13), the senator at the Senate’s official residence was the president of the STF, Edson Fachin, and Pacheco to deal with projects of interest to the Judiciary. Alcolumbre classified the meeting as a moment of “institutional partnership”. The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, and the president of the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), Herman Benjamin, also participated in this meeting.
There are 2 other candidates for Barroso’s vacancy who are running on the outside: the minister of the TCU (Court of Auditors of the Union) Bruno Dantas and the inspector general of the Union, Vinícius Carvalho.
Barroso his retirement on Thursday (Oct 9). Your Supreme Court will be on Friday (Oct 17). Lula will make his 11th appointment to the Court considering his 3 terms. With this, the PT member will have served the Court throughout his mandate. He will be the 3rd name of the current management, after Cristiano Zanin and Flávio Dino.
