President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for a private conversation, on the night of this Tuesday, 14th, at Palácio da Alvorada. On the agenda, the name that will replace Minister Luís Roberto Barroso in the Court.
Lula’s favorite to fill Barroso’s seat, who announced early retirement, is the chief minister of the Attorney General’s Office (AGU), Jorge Messias.
Dean of the Court, Gilmar Mendes – who participated in the meeting with the president – has another favorite: the former president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). STF ministers Cristiano Zanin, Alexandre de Moraes and Flávio Dino, and the head of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, were also present at Alvorada.

In addition to Gilmar, Dino and Alexandre de Moraes defend Pacheco’s nomination. So far, however, Lula has other plans for the senator. He wants Pacheco to be a candidate for the government of Minas Gerais, in 2026. The PT has no strong competitor and Lula needs a platform in Minas, the second electoral college in the country.
As Estadão showed, the president assesses that Messias is “ripe” for the position and is not a risky bet. Evangelical and a regular at the Baptist Church, the Union’s attorney general has Lula’s trust and has helped the government get closer to the segment.
The name chosen by the president for the STF will undergo a hearing in the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) and, then, the plenary review. Unlike other times, Lula has signaled that he wants to make his appointment to the Court soon.
