Allies of the union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, defend the quick appointment of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s assistant to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to avoid another episode of political wear and tear. With the retirement of Luís Roberto Barroso, Messias is seen as one of the favorites for the vacancy.
Members of Palácio do Planalto believe that the best way to contain pressure from the Senate for the nomination of Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), also considered for the vacancy, would be to speed up negotiations to send the name Messias.
The assessment is that, with the president’s appointment, senators would not have time to move or react. And from then on, any pressure would be useless.

There is a fear in Planalto that the good relationship with the Senate, which has become a counterpoint to the Chamber, will be undermined in the event that Lula takes too long to define the name because of movements in favor of Pacheco, former president of the House.
Lula’s nominee must be examined by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate and have his name approved by the main plenary of the House. At least 41 votes are needed for approval.
The presidential environment states that Lula will choose his nominee based on the criteria of trust and loyalty and then seek a composition with the Senate.

The expectation is that Lula will call the president of the Senate, Dani Alcolumbre (União-AP) for a conversation after having already defined the name. Lula’s interlocutors at the House do not believe in the hypothesis that Alcolumbre will prove contrary to the appointment of Messias.
“I think Brazil has something very interesting. People think they can decide for the government. Appointing a minister for the STF is eminently a task for the President of the Republic”, said Lula in Rome on Monday.
