This year, 57 people have been arrested across the state for selling adulterated alcoholic beverages. This Tuesday alone (14), six people were arrested during an operation to combat counterfeiting and adulteration of drinks containing methanol.
Operation Poison Source: Fonte do Veneno – was carried out in eight cities in São Paulo with the aim of dismantling criminal actions such as the production and sale of adulterated drinks. There were, in total, 20 search and seizure warrants in the capital of São Paulo, in Santo André, Poá, São José dos Campos, Santos, Guarujá, Presidente Prudente and Araraquara. Poison Source began after the arrest that caught one of the largest suppliers of counterfeit inputs and drinks.
According to the latest bulletin from the Ministry of Health, there are 213 registered notifications of methanol poisoning, with 32 confirmed cases and 181 under investigation – 320 suspected cases have already been discarded. The confirmed cases of poisoning due to adulterated drinks are in São Paulo (28), Paraná (3) and Rio Grande do Sul (1). There are five confirmed deaths in São Paulo and nine are being investigated – three in São Paulo, three in Pernambuco, one in Mato Grosso do Sul, one in Minas Gerais and one in Ceará.
