The secretary general and the president of the Socialist Party will propose to the National Socialist Commission on Sunday to support António José Seguro in the presidential elections.
This proposal is jointly endorsed by José Luís Carneiro and Carlos César and will be under analysis at the PS National Commission, scheduled for Sunday in Penafiel.
The meeting of the highest body between congresses will decide on the support of the PS in the presidential elections in January of next year, as well as analyzing the local results of Sunday’s elections.
Since assuming leadership of the PS, José Luís Carneiro has always referred a decision on the presidential elections to after Sunday’s municipal elections.
The former general secretary of the PS António José Seguro he already announced, on June 3, that he would be a candidate for President of the Republic, considering that the country needs “change and hope for a better life”, at a time when stability and trust are lacking.
“I decided and announced it today, on the day that a new legislature begins that will demand a lot from all of us: I am a candidate for President of the Republic”, he said in a short video published by TVI/CNN.
Seguro explained that he will be a candidate for Belém because he believes that Portugal “needs change and hope for a better life”.
“What we lack today is not just stability, it is trust. Trust in institutions, trust that those in power serve and do not serve themselves, trust that we will leave our children more than what we received from our parents”, he said.
