Vienna/Brussels – The EU Commission, which is responsible for legislative initiatives, contradicts a media report that the EU is planning to ban filter cigarettes. “To be clear: The European Commission does not plan to ban filter cigarettes,” said a spokesman for the authority. She alone can propose EU laws and thus introduce them into the legislative process. A legislative proposal usually also needs the approval of the European Parliament and the EU states.
