The decision to suspend the reform, communicated on Tuesday afternoon by Prime Minister Lecornu before the National Assembly, was the last resort of the prime minister to save his second term just a few days after its start.
And the fact is that, if this first week is going to be complicated for him, until he has to face this Thursday, The situation could have been much worse had we not agreed to this suspension, unconditionally demanded by the socialists to not let the government fall.

According to the Prime Minister, at that time he will propose an amendment to invalidate the personal reform that comes into force on January 1, 2026.
Due to this, Lecornu has passed the ‘hot potato’ to all parliamentarians, pointing out that “it will be Parliament who decides.” The decision implies that the reform will remain frozen until the next presidential elections are held in 2027.
However, this will come at a cost, as Lecornu has already reported. The most immediate, in 2026, the year in which the cost will be 400 million euros, while in 2027 it will almost quintuple, going to losses of 1,800 million. For all this, the prime minister assured that “there is no suspension without costs” and that “he will not accept anything,” although he did not say anything else about what measures he will take.
