After Trump threatens, FIFA says the decision on World Cup cities belongs to the government

FIFA stated that the decision on the security of the 2026 World Cup host cities rests with local governments.

The statement came after President Donald Trump threatened to remove games from Boston if the city didn’t “get things in order.”

“Safety and security are priorities at all FIFA events around the world. Safety and security are obviously the responsibility of governments, and they decide what is best for public safety,” a FIFA spokesperson said in a written statement. “We hope that all of our 16 host cities will be ready to host the games and meet all necessary requirements.”

The United States will host 78 of the 104 games at the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time.

FIFA did not comment on the cities or stadiums mentioned by Trump.

Boston argument

Infantino was with Trump at a press conference in Egypt, when the agreement between Israel and Gaza was announced, and is an ally of the American president.

“If someone is doing a bad job, and if I feel there are unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA, who is phenomenal – and say, ‘Let’s go to another location’ and they would do it. He wouldn’t love to do it, but he would do it very easily,” he said.

On Tuesday, he commented on violence in South Boston, including a police car set on fire.

The United States, Mexico and Canada will be joint headquarters of the .

Trump has already indicated his intention to discuss with Infantino the possible change of games in Seattle and San Francisco, also among the 16 host cities, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
