The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, criticized the National Congress this Wednesday, 15th, and said that it “never had the low level it has now”. Lula said that what he called “the far right that was elected in 2022 is the worst thing there is.”
The criticism was made alongside the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), during an event celebrating Teachers’ Day in Rio de Janeiro. Motta did not react, whether in agreement or disagreement.
“Hugo (Motta) is president of this Congress and he knows that he has never had the low level of quality he has now. That extreme right that was elected in 2022 is the worst thing there is. We cannot have a president who denies that Covid-19 existed, denies the vaccine, distributes medicine that is worthless, that has a Minister of Health who doesn’t understand a damn thing about health”, said the President of the Republic.

Lula warned those present at the event that in 2026 they need to be more attentive in the election. He stated that “we are not putting the fox in charge of the henhouse” and said that we need to “decide what kind of Brazil we want”.
“Next year we will have elections and we will have to decide what type of Brazil we want, it will be decided by you (the people). You will have to know which senator you will elect, the federal deputy, the state deputy. That is what Congress is all about, the result of the political awareness you had on election day. Afterwards, there is no point in complaining”, declared Lula.
The president cited the case of Rio de Janeiro. Addressing the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), Lula said he does not understand how the State elected Wilson Witzel in 2018.

“I can’t understand how this State, which is highly politicized, elected a guy as governor who was a crooked judge, stayed there and didn’t do a damn thing, got involved in corruption and was elected,” said Lula.
Witzel ended up impeached. In his place, Cláudio Castro (PL) took over, who is governor to this day.
Lula is facing a turbulent moment in his relationship with the National Congress. Last week saw the Chamber of Deputies defeat the government and bury a provisional measure that would guarantee around R$20 billion next year to the public coffers.
The president said that “this year was the year of harvest and next year is the year of truth”, adapting the mantra he has been using since the beginning of the year about the results that would appear over the months. He also stated that “whoever wants to lie, go to the hat house, (because) we will not allow liars to return to this country”.
