With an almost empty chamber, the debate in the National Assembly about the motions of censure against him second government of Lecornu II It began early this Thursday, in a context marked by the debate on the suspension of the pension reform and the need to urgently approve the 2026 budgets.
“Emmanuel Macron is no longer the guarantor of the institutions of our country. He has not once listened to the indignation expressed,” said the rebellious deputy, Aurélie Trouvé, before the chamber.
Sebasiten Lecornu faces his first motions of censure, filed by The Rebellious France and National Group, after his resignation and days after his election. For both parties, the suspension of the pension reform announced by the prime minister last Monday is not enough, they want the president to resign Emmanuel Macron, who they do not see as a legitimate figure to govern.
After the first interventions in the French parliament, the Prime Minister responded sharply to Marine Le Pen; “The government does not fear the people,” he assured and insisted that this executive has the support of a “parliamentary base broad enough to maintain its position.”
The key to censorship, until now, was held by the Socialist party, who had made it a condition to suspend the unpopular pension reform in exchange for not voting to block the new government. Lecornu conceded, although with nuances, this change “will cost the State 400 million euros in 2026, and 1.8 billion in 2027”, for which it must be compensated through cuts, and he will not accept any agreement that calls into question the credibility of his Government.
The socialists seem to have accepted this pact, and with the exception of some deputies, the party will not vote on any of the two motions presented this Thursday. Even so, the threat persists, since only a couple of votes would be enough to obtain the 288 needed to bring down Macron’s new government.
The threat persists
The environmentalists “they will vote in favor of censorship almost unanimously,” predicted its leader, Marine Tondelier, denouncing Sébastien Lecornu’s lack of environmental commitment. Like the national coordinator of LFI, Manuel Bompard, who reiterated his call to all deputies to vote in favor of censure. “I make a special appeal to socialist deputies to disobey Olivier Faure’s instructions. Voting in favor of censure this morning is a matter of dignity,” he declared.
On the conservative side, the author of the second motion of censure, Marine Le Pen is clear: “We will vote without hesitation to censure your government, because your budget is not a budget,” declared the president of the National Group in the National Assembly, arguing in turn in favor of the motion of censure presented by her political party and its ally, Eric Ciotti.
However, a large proportion of Republicans, They will not vote for censure, as announced this Thursday by government spokesperson Maud Bregeon, who reiterated the need to “first debate and discuss, before censoring.”
