The National Executive Committee of the PT released this Thursday, the 16th, a note in which it criticizes the decision of the President of the United States Donald Trump that authorizes secret CIA operations in Venezuela.

According to the party, Trump’s statements “are an affront to the sovereignty of the South American country and a violation of International Law. It is an unacceptable and deplorable initiative”, says the statement.

The PT cites attacks on ships carried out by the American military that caused the death of at least 27 people and points out that the actions take place “without legal basis and without any investigative process”. According to the North American president, the vessels were carrying drugs for the USA.

The statement from the acronym’s Executive also states that the CIA, the United States Central Intelligence Agency, “has a long history of sponsoring and articulating illegal and destabilizing actions in South American countries” that “have left marks of interference, illegalities, coups, repression and bloody dictatorships on the subcontinent”.

“The Workers’ Party strongly condemns yet another US attack on Venezuela’s sovereignty. We are defenders of International Law and the principles of non-interference and self-determination of people anywhere in the world”, the note concludes.

To date, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has not commented on the actions announced by Donald Trump. The two spoke by phone for the first time last week, in a gesture of rapprochement after the diplomatic crisis caused by tariffs and sanctions imposed by the US on Brazilian authorities.

This Thursday, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira meets with the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in Washington. As shown by the Estadãothere is an expectation that governments will address the crises in Venezuela and Haiti.

Trump said this Wednesday, the 15th, that he is also considering carrying out land attacks on the country, amid increased tension between the White House and Venezuela. “We are certainly thinking about land now, because we already have the sea well under control,” he declared at a press conference in the Oval Office.

In August, the president ordered the sending of 10,000 men to the Caribbean, in addition to eight warships, including submarines, destroyers and a vessel adapted for amphibious attack. The justification is to combat drug trafficking.

The new authorization would allow the CIA to carry out lethal operations in Venezuela and conduct a series of operations in the Caribbean. The agency could take covert action against dictator Nicolás Maduro or his government, unilaterally or in conjunction with a broader military operation.
