Statement by United States trade representative Jamieson Greer, was given on the eve of the negotiation meeting with Brazil
The United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, said this Wednesday (October 15, 2025) that the tariff applied to Brazilian products is related to “extreme concerns about the rule of law, censorship and human rights” in Brazil. The statement was made when explaining the , which came into force on August 6, 2025.
According to Greer, the measure was motivated by cases in which “a Brazilian judge took it upon himself to order US companies to censor themselves, giving them secret orders to manage the flow of information”.
He explained that 10% of the value refers to the reciprocal tariff “that everyone has”used for “control the global trade deficit”. The rest would be a way for the United States to communicate to Brazil its dissatisfaction with the country’s political situation.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was also present and interrupted Greer’s speech to add that there had been “illegal detention of American citizens who were in Brazil”without detailing the cases.

The statements were made on the eve of the negotiation meeting between Brazil and the United States to discuss tariffs. The meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, will take place this Thursday (Oct 16, 2025).
Trump had already given the message
To the the 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, Trump justified the increase by the treatment that the Brazilian government gave to (PL), whom he said he respected “deeply”. On another occasion, the North American even stated that the former president is the victim of a “witch hunt” and asked for the trial to be stopped “immediately”.
The deputy (PL-SP) has been in the US since February lobbying for sanctions against Brazilian authorities to guarantee his father’s freedom, Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for an attempted coup d’état by the STF (Supreme Federal Court).
