The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Wednesday (15) that it will file a complaint against the United States with the UN Security Council and the organization’s secretary general.

The complaint will be filed this Thursday (16) and comes amid increased tension between the two countries.

Nicolás Maduro’s regime has said the attacks on boats in the Caribbean and the use of the CIA are a “regime change” operation aimed at seizing the country’s oil resources.

The President of the United States justified the measure by claiming that there are many drugs being sent from the South American country to the USA.

“We have a lot of drugs arriving from Venezuela, and many of the Venezuelan drugs arrive by sea, so you can see that, but we are also going to stop them on land,” said the president.

Announcement

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects the bellicose and extravagant statements of the President of the United States, in which he publicly admits to having authorized operations to act against the peace and stability of Venezuela.

This unprecedented statement constitutes a serious violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and obliges the international community to denounce these clearly immoderate and unconscionable statements.

We observe with extreme alarm the use of the CIA, as well as the announced military deployments to the Caribbean, which constitute a policy of aggression, threats and harassment against Venezuela.

It is clear that such maneuvers seek to legitimize a “regime change” operation with the ultimate objective of seizing Venezuelan oil resources. Furthermore, the US president’s statements seek to stigmatize Venezuelan and Latin American migration, fueling dangerous and xenophobic rhetoric.

At the extraordinary meeting of CELAC foreign ministers, called by the Pro Tempore Presidency of Colombia, Venezuela formally presented this complaint and demanded an immediate regional response.

Tomorrow, our Permanent Mission to the UN will present this complaint to the Security Council and the Secretary-General, demanding the accountability of the United States government and the adoption of urgent measures to prevent a military escalation in the Caribbean, a zone declared by CELAC in 2014.

The international community must understand that impunity for these acts will have dangerous political consequences that must be stopped immediately.
