- Niamh Cassidy discovered she had heart problems thanks to the watch.
- Doctors diagnosed her with tachycardia, which led to heart failure.
- Shortly after the diagnosis, the woman became pregnant.
- She had to undergo a caesarean section to save her baby.
In the summer of 2023, Niamh from the English city of Manchester decided to start running in order to exercise together with her partner, who regularly ran marathons. Despite the fact that she often visited the gym, she couldn’t run more than a kilometer without getting out of breath. That’s when she noticed on her watch that she was alerted to a high heart rate. “At first I ignored it, which I regret now. If it wasn’t for my watch, I wouldn’t have noticed that something was wrong“, she stated.
Later, her father also noticed that she gets tired quickly when running. “We only did a five-minute warm-up and my heart rate was 170,” Niamh added, noting that she immediately headed to the hospital. After a week her doctors diagnosed tachycardia, a condition that causes her heart to beat faster than usual. But after chest pains, palpitations and shortness of breath also began to bother her, she also had to contend with mild heart failure.
Just days after the shocking diagnosis, Niamh found out she was pregnant. Because she had a weakened heart, she had to undergo an emergency caesarean section instead of a traditional delivery. Despite the risk, she gave birth to a healthy daughter, Mable. “I was more worried about her than myself. I was frustrated that my heart couldn’t handle it,” mother clarified.
A few months after their daughter Niamh was born, they were diagnosed with a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. It is a disease of the heart muscle in which the ventricles become larger and thinner, which leads to their weakening and deterioration of function.
Niamh credits her smartwatch for not only saving her life, but also that of her baby. Nevertheless, she had to adapt to big changes, because due to the disease she cannot do the activities she used to enjoy.
“It’s frustrating, especially now that I have Mable. A lot of mums go for walks and I can’t join them because I get out of breath. I can’t do what the average person my age can do, but there are things I don’t have a problem with and that’s what I’m focusing on now,” the English woman stated.
