Polish cemeteries delight with the glow of thousands of candles and a riot of colors of flowers, which often also emit a wonderful scent. Decorations are important because they help create a unique atmosphere that can only be experienced during this special time of the year.
However, some grave decorations are unwelcome. At first glance, they don’t bother anyone, but it’s better not to put them on monuments because it may be perceived badly. It’s better not to risk it if you don’t want to fall victim to the gossip of nasty neighbors.

Lilacs and bright yellow flowers are also not seen in the best light. The first ones are supposed to bring misfortune, and the second ones have a bad reputation in the southern part of the country because they are associated with betrayal, falsehood and seem too flashy.
However, the worst choice for a cemetery are all artificial flowers and bouquets. They are associated with emptiness, as well as with cold, lack of feelings and the metaphorical sense of passing. Heathers, chrysanthemums, dahlias or carnations will be a much better choice.
In theory, any candle in a cemetery will work well, but in real life it is different. If you don’t want your neighbors gossiping behind your back, avoid black lanterns. They seem gloomy, dark and oppressive.
There is no hope in them, which is why the classic ones – white or gold – are preferable because they symbolize light and memory. Candles in unusual shapes, with glitter and flashing are often considered kitschy. They are associated more with a festival than a burial place.
Balloons or shiny decorations are too much in a cemetery… Just like eating food over graves. When it comes to mascots, toys or figurines, they are allowed on the graves of children.
However, they may seem inappropriate on the tombstones of older people. Especially if there are loads of them there. Also, too many candles may look too gaudy. It is better to choose a few simple decorations so as not to “burden the soul”.
