It said the chief of staff of the armed forces, Muhammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari, one of the highest-ranking military officials of the Iran-backed group, was killed “in the line of duty.”
Without directly blaming Israel for his killing, the Houthis said the conflict with Israel is not over. Israel will “receive its deterrent punishment for the crimes it has committed.”
Israel’s attitude towards the Houthis
In August, Israel targeted the Houthi chief of staff, the defense minister and other high-ranking officials in airstrikes in Sana’a, Yemen, that killed the prime minister of Yemen’s Houthi government and other ministers.
Israel said at the time that the airstrike had targeted al-Ghamari, the defense minister and other high-ranking officials and that it was determining the outcome. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said today that Gamari was targeted by an Israeli strike. “We will do the same against any threat in the future, too,” he added.
Who was Gamari and what is happening now with the Houthis
Ghamari was a member of the Houthi “Office of Jihad,” headed by Abdul Malik al-Houthi, who is responsible for overseeing military operations.
The Houthis fired missiles at Israel acting in what they said was solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza — most of the missiles were intercepted. Israel responded with strikes on areas of Yemen controlled by the Houthis.
Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said last week that the group would monitor Israel’s compliance with the Gaza ceasefire agreement and would resume support for Gaza if Israel did not comply.
