it climbed again this Wednesday after the sighting of a Russian submarine in waters near the Swedish coast, a fact that immediately activated the military response of the Scandinavian country and that has aroused the attention of its NATO allies.
As confirmed by the Swedish Navy, the submersible was detected in the Kattegat region, a strategic maritime area located between the Jutland peninsula (Denmark) and the western coast of Sweden. The submarine would have entered the Suur-Beldi Strait before being located and tracked by Swedish fighter jets and warships.
“This is a routine operation that is carried out in close collaboration with our allies,” indicated the Navy through the X social network, also ensuring that they have “a good overview of the situation in our immediate environment.”
The first indication of the submarine’s presence came from Norwegian navigator Petter Ingebregtsen, who was sailing near Smögen, on the Swedish west coast. “A silhouette appeared on the horizon… When it was about 500 meters away, it looked like a submarine,” declared to the newspaper The evening paper.
Using binoculars, Ingebregtsen confirmed that it was a Russian military vessel and even claimed to have seen members of the crew. Barely half an hour after their sighting, several Swedish fighter jets and the coast guard arrived in the area.
This incident adds to the rest of recent violations of NATO airspace by Russian fighters and kamikaze drones. In response to these interferences, the German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, announced in Brussels a reinforcement of the military presence in Eastern Europe. In fact, it has already assured that it will deploy several in Poland as part of the patrols to protect the eastern flank of the Alliance.
