Former governor of Ceará Ciro Gomes asked to disaffiliate from the PDT in a letter sent to the party’s national president, Carlos Lupi, this Thursday (17). The gesture comes after the rapprochement between the PDT and the PT government of Elmano de Freitas, in Ceará, according to an investigation by the Folha de S.Paulo.
Ciro should define his new political destiny next week, with the PSDB appearing as his main destination, according to the newspaper’s findings. In July, the former presidential candidate met with Tucana leaders and stated that his return to the party “had already been decided”. The expectation is that he will run again for the Ceará government.
In addition to the tucanos, União Brasil also expressed interest in hosting the former governor.

In recent months, Ciro has intensified his rapprochement with sectors of the right and hardened his tone against the Lula (PT) government and the current state administration of Elmano de Freitas, whom he has publicly criticized.
The departure was lamented by historical allies. The president of the PDT in São Paulo, Antonio Neto, stated that the party is losing “a valuable member”.
“Today is a sad day for the PDT and for all of us who believe in the national and popular development project with the departure of comrade Ciro Gomes,” he said.
“I lose a party companion, but I don’t lose a friend”, he added.
