A new survey of the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) revealed that app workers achieved a monthly income higher than the average of other private sector workers in Brazil in 2023. However, this result is linked to considerably longer working hours. The analysis is by Fernando Nakagawa, in CNN 360º.
The average income on digital platforms is R$2,996, 4% higher than the average for other employed workers. Labor market experts point out that educational training in Brazil has been insufficient to guarantee a qualified insertion in the world of traditional workleading many professionals to look for alternatives in the application economy.
“According to the data, around 1.7 million people worked on digital platforms at the end of last year, representing 1.9% of the employed population – a significant increase compared to the 1.5% recorded in 2022”, says Nakagawa.
Workers’ profile
A Most workers are concentrated in the transport sector, whether with vehicles or motorcycles. Furthermore, 485 thousand people make deliveries using motorbikes or bicycles, and approximately 300 thousand work in various professional services, such as plumbers, plumbing firefighters and painters.
O survey indicates that 84% of professionals registered on platforms are men, with almost 40% in the age group between 25 and 39 years old. Relevant data shows that 59% have completed secondary education or incomplete higher education.
“A worrying fact reveals that only 35.9% of those contribute to Social Security, while in the formal market this rate exceeds 80%”, says the Economics analyst at CNN.
