Pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo reported this Saturday that the drug Enhertu, which had already become a fundamental treatment for advanced breast cancer, can also bring powerful benefits to patients when administered at earlier stages of the disease, paving the way for higher cure rates.

The new data were presented at the annual conference of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO). Two studies have opened up the possibility of expanding the use of the already best-selling drug to tens of thousands of additional patients.

According to the statement, the results also reflect how drugs like Enhertu — known as antibody-drug conjugates, or ADCs — are increasingly advancing beyond advanced-stage and metastatic cancers, revolutionizing traditional chemotherapy regimens.

The results showed that Enhertu significantly reduced the risk of invasive disease recurrence or death by 53% compared to T-DM1 as post-neoadjuvant treatment,

After three years, 92.4% of patients in the Enhertu group were alive and free of invasive disease, compared to 83.7% in the T-DM1 group.

According to Susan Galbraith, Executive Vice President of Oncology and Hematology Research and Development at AstraZeneca, progress in the treatment of early HER2-positive breast cancer has been significant, but the management of patients at higher risk of recurrence remains challenging.

“This historical data, along with that from DESTINY-Breast11, highlights the potential for Enhertu to become a pivotal treatment in early-stage breast cancer, increasing the likelihood that more patients can be cured in this setting.”
