Fuel prices in Portugal will change again from this day onwards

With energy markets fluctuating constantly, fuel prices are changing again. The price of fuel in Portugal is expected to change at the beginning of next week, according to forecasts released by the entity specializing in the automotive sector, the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP). Diesel is expected to become slightly cheaper, while gasoline is expected to maintain its current price.

According to the ACP, the price of simple diesel fuel should fall by around 1.5 cents per liter, while simple 95 gasoline should remain unchanged. Currently, simple diesel costs an average of 1,542 euros per liter and simple 95 gasoline costs 1,698 euros, according to the most recent data from the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology, available on the official Online Fuel Prices portal.

This slight decline comes at a time when the Government is preparing changes to tax policy on energy products, following recommendations from the European Commission on the end of discounts on fuel taxes.

The price of fuel in Portugal has reflected variations in international oil prices and continues to be one of the main factors impacting family budgets.

Government analyzes end of ISP discounts

The Government is working on a solution that will allow the gradual elimination of discounts on the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (ISP) without causing immediate increases in the price paid by consumers, according to the Notícias ao Minuto portal.

The European Commission’s recommendation has existed since 2023, when Brussels alerted Portugal to the need to end temporary reductions in ISP, considered exceptional measures. The Government received a new letter in June this year, reinforcing this request.

Phased adjustments to fuel prices

According to the same source, the Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, acknowledged that “adjustments” in the price of fuel may be necessary, but argued that this should only happen in times of falling gasoline prices.

“The position that the Government took last year was to only make adjustments when there is a drop in the price of gasoline, so that people do not feel that they will pay more because of the increase in rates”, he explained, adding that it would be “unthinkable to do it all at once”.

ISP revenues expected to increase in 2026

According to the State Budget proposal for 2026, the Government estimates that revenues from the ISP will increase by 187 million euros, totaling 4,254 million euros next year, says the .

The new budget, the second prepared by the team led by Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, has already been approved by the Council of Ministers and will be debated in the Assembly of the Republic at the end of October, with the final global vote scheduled for November 27th.
