Hamas is not committed to disarmament and wants to remain on the ground in Gaza

A ceasefire has been in force in the Gaza Strip for a week, agreed between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. But the group reveals that it does not intend to fulfill the assumptions set out by Trump for a future of peace in the territory.

Hamas wants to maintain control in Gaza during the transition period. In an interview with Reuters, the group does not commit to disarmament.

“This is a transitional phase. At the civilian level, there will be a technocratic administration. But the Hamas will be present on the ground”, assured Mohammed Nazzal, member of the Hamas political cabinet, in the interview with Reuters,

Asked if Hamas will hand over its weapons, the Hamas political member responds that he cannot say “yes” or “no”.

“Honestly, it depends on the nature of the project,” he declared.

Mohammed Nazzal also argued that, “after the transition phase”, “it will be necessary” to hold elections in the Gaza Strip.

It has been in force in the Gaza Strip for a week now, promoted by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, and negotiated with the mediation of Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The agreement implies, at an initial stage, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza territory, the entry of humanitarian aid into the region and the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners. In the future, the plan should involve disarmament of Hamas and handing over governance of the region to a post-war administration from which the group would be excluded.
